January 17, 20220
Who was Martin Luther King?

Martin Luther King was a civil rights activist who advocated the use of nonviolent protests to put an end on racial segregation of African Americans in the United States. His vision of equity, activism and inspirational speeches made him an impacting figure and changed the lives of African Americans once and for all.

Why do we celebrate the 17th of January as his day?

MLK Day has been a federal holiday since 1986. It honors the achievements of the King, his life and legacy. It is celebrated with marches, parades and civil rights speeches, attended by political leaders and activists. Americans view it as a service holiday and they celebrate by volunteering for different causes.

The importance of this day stands in the fact that it concludes the lifelong efforts of Martin Luther King who dedicated his own life to this cause and made a huge turning point in the way that African Americans were treated and approached.

What did the King stand for?

Martin Luther King viewed law as an opportunity and as an obstacle too. He believed that laws which became an obstacle for peaceful protests were an obstacle in gaining racial justice. The King saw law as an opportunity to build better lives, but he stated that the efficiency of the law must be always accompanied by social action.

In his point of view, civil disobedience was the key to go straight to negotiations with the government. He pleaded in favor of disobeying unjust laws if change was aimed. By creating a massive disobedience act, the government would have no other choice but to agree for changes to be made.

We must take advantage of today to celebrate equality, peaceful organization and to reflect on Kings messages. May this day and his own words be everlasting and remembered!

One has not only a legal, but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.”
